Skuna Bay Salmon Secures 4th BAP Star as Gold River Hatchery attains Certification

GOLD RIVER, BC ( October 7, 2015) — The Global Aquaculture Alliance, the leading standards-setting organization for aquaculture seafood, has awarded its Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification to Gold River Hatchery, making Skuna Bay Salmon a four BAP star operation.

“Our Craftsman Farmers have been tending our farms using Best Aquaculture Practices’ high standards since 2011 when our first sea farm sites were certified. It’s very gratifying to have our Gold River Hatchery join with our processor and our feed provider as Best Aquaculture Practices certified partners in addition to our sea farms. This is a cornerstone of our commitment to the highest standards of responsibility in rearing good salmon,” said Stewart Hawthorn, Skuna Bay Salmon.

Skuna Bay’s Craftsman Farmers work to ensure every one of our fish is grown with minimal handling until they are strong and healthy enough to go to sea. It takes 3 ½ years to raise a Skuna Bay Salmon to maturity, beginning as an eyed egg in the Gold River Hatchery. Every Skuna Bay Salmon begins its life in the Gold River Hatchery.

To attain certification, Gold River Hatchery was individually and personally inspected by an independent and certified auditor to ensure it meets specific criteria and standards. Best Aquaculture Practices’ unique and robust standards are developed by a committee of diverse stakeholders including leading progressive environmental and related advocacy organizations. Under BAP’s stringent policies, Gold River Hatchery must be audited and reassessed every year in order to retain the high standard of BAP certification.

“We have always said that we are committed to meeting and upholding Best Aquaculture Practices’ sustainability standards in all Skuna Bay salmon not only now, but in the future through ongoing certification,” said Hawthorn. “We saw Global Aquaculture Alliance and Best Aquaculture Practices certification as a natural fit for Skuna Bay. We share the same values and passion for farming and sharing healthful, sustainable salmon.”
